Human potential is ultimately about the pursuit
of individual excellence for the benefit of all. Many people use the term
“spiritual development”. When this is properly examined or understood, it boils
down to being the best you can be - for the common good. It involves developing
unrealised capabilities or capacity, and going beyond self-imposed limitations.
A greater meaning or purpose is gained through increased concern for the wider
world beyond “me, me, me”.
There is a lot of common ground. Various religions have urged people to change their selfish ways for thousands of years. Philosophers have argued for going beyond the limits of self. Political systems have attempted to find a better way for both the individual and society. Certain poets have quietly spoken of greater love, understanding, and the unity of life. More recently, some branches of psychology have suggested a deeper approach of transcending usual human limitations. Experiments with hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD in the 1960s and 1970s seemed to occasionally provide glimpses of a greater love and understanding. Astronauts and cosmonauts who orbited or landed on the moon described similar experiences involving greater thoughtfulness and heightened concern for others. When viewed as a whole, there is certainly a human urge to go beyond the limitations and pettiness of small-mindedness and greed. Expressed simply, it is about becoming more fully alive or more fully human. Iain Scott, founder of The Human Potential Trust, is an unusual individual. Here is the early part of Iain's story, in his own words: "Beginning in the summer of 1975, a series of 'oneness' experiences changed my life. I described the initial event in ‘Human Potential - the search for that "something more"’ as follows: Late one evening, I experienced an astonishing expansion of consciousness. Timeless moments of ecstasy and oneness revealed a reality I had not previously considered. There was an intense awareness of the unity of everything and everyone. Life had an obvious meaning and purpose. This mental awareness was matched by an equally intense feeling of love, caring, and belonging. I could see the problems facing our world and also a solution to them. There was an incredible sense of needing to help others – not in any compulsive or unbalanced way, but rather because service was the natural thing to do. My selfish tendencies had effortlessly melted away, although I still retained an appreciation of individuality. There was no separateness, only oneness. What happened was completely unexpected and apparently spontaneous. I had never heard of mystical experiences or any such mention of such a dramatic change of awareness. I was not practising meditation, nor had I taken any mind-expanding drugs. I had a practical, no-nonsense upbringing and was training as a biologist. The sudden shift of consciousness was profound. Dozens of additional oneness experiences quickly followed during the next few weeks, each having a powerful effect on my perception, thinking, feeling, values, and actions. Later, I read a number of books about altered states of mind - but most seemed to lack first-hand knowledge and/or failed to offer a proper explanation of what was happening to me. The spontaneous process of transformation meanwhile continued, with repeated insights into this "new" non-selfish consciousness bringing increasing familiarity and greater understanding. If the first few oneness experiences had initially awakened me from the blinkered world of ordinary awareness, the frequent on-going exposure reinforced this awakening. Between these direct experiences of unity, the links to normal consciousness became progressively weakened and insignificant. Then, in 1978, a final realisation removed the last mental barrier of any ordinary consciousness. The perception and feeling of interconnectedness has since stayed with me as a constant and continual experience. This "new" consciousness is real and a beneficial alternative to that of normal self-orientated behaviour. It is usually referred to as enlightenment. I call it non-selfishness. My actions have changed considerably as a result of the transformation, with concern for the needs of the whole replacing the dominating wants of normal or ordinary consciousness. The way I look at life now differs significantly from before. I see billions of human beings acting in a basically selfish manner. From my perspective, there is little difference in behaviour between so-called "good" and so-called "bad" people - compared to the huge potential offered by genuine non-selfishness. Society has a severely limited idea of what is "good" and "bad", involving a great deal of hypocrisy and finger-pointing. Standards which may presently be socially acceptable and conventionally desirable are a long way from being completely altruistic or non-selfish. Human beings are psychologically immature to varying degrees, still in the early stages of development. Non-selfishness offers a clear way forward from this troublesome infancy towards a more balanced way of living." * From Actions Speak Louder Than Words by Iain Scott. www.thehumanpotentialtrust.org/ The Human Brain The more that is found out about the human brain, the more amazing and remarkable it appears to be. And so this begs the question of what is the extent of our mental capabilities and whether there are significant limitations to what we are capable of. Throughout history there have always been the Leonardo da Vincis, Beethovens and Einsteins, creative geniuses who have provided us with a yardstick for what we all may be capable of. But it must, of course, be asked whether such individuals are in some sense 'freaks', having brains which are distinctly different from those of the mass of the population. In other words, to what extent is genius a result of nature or nurture? The evidence appears to indicate that nurture has a significant part to play in the creation of genius, and that given appropriate 'external' conditions we all have enormous potential to move far beyond the range of our present performance. Moving Beyond our Present Boundaries Evidence that creative genius is not inborn, but is available to all is readily available. Consider the following:
Siddhi Yoga In India, there is a practice called Siddhi Yoga, where the student learns that the outer world can be controlled by the inner being, and in controlling the outer world, a possibility of the human inner world becomes manifest and can lead to self-realization. Self-realization is the direct knowledge and experience of God. In this world, the Siddis, or the powers of the human spirit, must be mastered to go into the higher levels of consciousness. But all the while that they are training you for this understanding, they are warning you against the possible dangers in doing so. From my own training in Siddhi yoga, this is what I learned.
Drunvalo Melchizedek www.spiritofmaat.com/archive/jan2/miracles.htm Two Famous Chinese Psychics In Paul Dong's book on the psychic children of China, called China's SuperPsychics, he talks about two famous Chinese psychics. Both of these were discovered when they were children. Today, they are grown men, about 27 years old. Both are able to demonstrate psychic abilities on the same level that Jesus did. These two have been scientifically observed by the Chinese government performing what most of us would call miracles. They can float objects around the room with their minds. In controlled, scientific experiments they can move objects in and out of sealed containers. And they can perform many other incredible feats of magic. One of them has even been scientifically observed walking through a solid wall. But one of these two pyschics is still in his ego, and the Chinese government is very much afraid of him because of his power. Wherever he goes, to prime his ego, the government literally rolls out the red carpet, with fanfare. This man knows whatever you are thinking. And if he doesn't like you, his favourite thing to do is to harm you. He will send a "ball of fire" across space to where you are and set your clothes on fire, burning your body. He obviously doesn't care what happens to you. The other man can do every single thing that the first can do, except he has one more ability: he can heal people. The first man can heal no one, because he doesn't love them. But the second one cares and loves people. He can heal them, and he does. So here again we can see that one can be very advanced psychically and still have an ego very much in control. Beyond Magic When a student passes safely beyond the ego and at the same time beyond magic, what happens? A self-realized magician transforms into an enlightened being, a being who has merged with God, and where God looks out through his or her eyes. The magic is now a miracle, for it is God who is doing it. The appearance all over the world of children who can perform superpsychic feats has prompted many people to research this phenomenon. One spin-off has been the effort to teach so-called ``normal'' children to utilize the same abilities that the superpsychic children seem to be born with. Drunvalo Melchizedek www.spiritofmaat.com/archive/jan2/miracles.htm Teaching Blind Children to "See'' Of all the individuals who are teaching people to acquire superpsychic abilities, perhaps the most successful has been Viasheslav Mihailovich Bronnikov. A native of Feodosia in the Ukraine, Bronnikov has created a phenomenal method of developing extrasensory perception in both children and adults. The Bronnikov Method allows children who were born blind to develop an alternative way of seeing that involves what Bronnikov refers to as a kind of radar. Bronnikov teaches his students about an inner screen which, he says, always pops up at some point in the student's practice. But if the reports are true, Bronnikov's results far surpass those of teachers in the West. Even more exciting is that his methods have proved successful with a few adults -- especially those who are highly motivated to heal. To promote his method, Bronnikov has founded an Academy of Human Development in Moscow and is its president. But though his achievements are mind-boggling, until now he has had no presence on the Internet except for a few newspaper articles in Russian. In a video promoting the Bronnikov method, 9-year-old Sasha Levit of Moscow demonstrated his ability to see blindfolded, describing his surroundings and reading an imprint on a medal supplied by one of the presentation attendees. Sasha has also reportedly expanded his physical vision from 3 percent to 13 percent. On his inner bio-computer screen, Sasha examines the cataract in his own eye, then goes from there to the cellular level, where he looks at the chromatin (the chromosome basis for seeing), and checks the nature of the protein produced by what he is viewing. Then he gives his body directions to correct any abnormalities. Sasha says, "I possess an inner vision. I can control the inner computer screen. I can store numbers there and retrieve them later. I can read with my eyes closed and I have developed a photographic memory.'' Night and Day Processes of the Brain Darkness is one of the keys to teaching what Bronnikov calls the "night mode'' of seeing. For example, as part of 6-year-old Yulia Zaichenko's program with Bronnikov, she played ball blindfolded. "Night and day processes of the brain are very different,'' Bronnikov tells us. "When we shut our eyes and the light no longer comes in, we get a connection to another source. It has to do with the spinal cord and with certain energy channels that change the pattern of how our brain works. The ability to remap the brain [in night mode] is what makes geniuses. We have found that it's possible for almost any person to learn this. Almost all children younger than fourteen are able to learn this.'' At some point in their training with the night mode, a screen pops up in the student's inner mind. This screen appears to be indispensable to developing superpsychic abilities, and may indicate the key to Bronnikov's success rate. In Mexico, Inge Bardor and her fellow students also were blindfolded -- but if new students could not see the inner screen within a couple of weeks they were sent home. In China, the psychic teachers told their students to clear their heads and concentrate, and achieved, at best, a 20 percent success rate. Bronnikov appears to be more flexible in his approach and encourages a sense of fun and discovery. And he is willing to wait for each student's inner screen to appear. This patience may account for his nearly 100 percent success with children under the age of 14. It's Like Dreaming: You Can Do Anything Bronnikov started to train his daughter when she was six years old, and at first he had to remind her to practice. Then one day, he was surprised to find her "viewing'' a cartoon on her inner screen, where a wolf was chasing a rabbit. Bronnikov told her to change the plot, and make the rabbit run after the wolf. "Doing this kind of activity,'' Bronnikov says, "stimulates brain development. It is a fast dream state - but the person is still wide awake.'' So the Bronnikov Method works a lot like lucid dreaming - conscious, or controlled dreaming - but without going to sleep. In a lucid dream, it is possible to do anything you can think of. "And,'' says Bronnikov, "it is the same in the waking dream. You are bound only by your imagination.'' Bronnikov's son, Vladimir, has also received training in the Method. It began when he was nine. Now 14, Vladimir possesses photographic and bio-computer memory, can diagnose and heal others, and controls the energy of his body. When a CAT Scan was done on Vladimir's brain, Dr. G. V. Taratynova, a neuropsychologist, reading the CAT Scan results, said that Vladimir was using about 80 percent of his brain when solving problems, whereas in most people only about 3 percent of the brain's neuronal cells are active! "We are dealing with the ability to control one's own mind,'' says Taratynova, "and this is the most valuable thing of all that the Bronnikov Method achieves.'' Yuri Pytev, professor of physics, also has conducted scientific experiments with Vladimir, recording his abilities to "see'' objects in other rooms and in their natural colors - even when the remote objects were shielded with colored glass. Commenting on his son, Bronnikov says, "It's not that I help my son - it's the son who is able to help his dad. He has six forms of [supernormal] vision now. He can see DNA!'' How Far Can We Go? "We see that our organism possesses great abilities,'' Bronnikov says. "And we all know that our mind uses only 4 to 5 percent of our brain. Simple and comprehensive exercises return powerful results. The main result is in the brain development and expansion. We possess knowledge on superconscious functions, and we give students knowledge that allows them not to get sick. What we are doing isn't supposed to replace medicine. We want to give the medical profession a new instrument.'' The idea that everyone might be able to learn to access inner vision holds immense possibility and hope. Can we even imagine what the world might look like if we all could "see''? http://www.spiritofmaat.com/archive/oct1/bronnkov.htm |
